- 1-1/2 cups warm tap water
- 2 tablespoon margarine
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey
- 3-1/2 cups bread flour or all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoon instant nonfat dry milk powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup dry oatmeal
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
Measure the ingredients into the bread pan in the order listed. Make a well in the flour and sprinkle the yeast into it. Set the machine to it’s Basic Cycle. On my machine this lasts for 3 hours. Press Start, and let the machine work it’s magic. Remove the cooked bread from the pan after baking and allow it to cool before slicing.
The top of this bread will sometimes cave in a little during baking. That is all right. The bread still tastes very good. It has a moist, chewy texture which I like with salads. The oats act as a natural preservative, giving this loaf better keeping qualities than plain white bread.

This is a super good bread.. rises nicely and I didn’t have a problem with any caving in on the top.. the crust was nice and crunchy when cooked on dark crust! Just the way we like it. yummmy!!! thanks for the recipe!

Can this recipe be adapted for non-bread machine use? Now that I’m retired, I’m trying my hand at some bread making but don’t have a bread machine. Like to try my hand at healthy breads and this recipe sounds like a good one!
This is a really good bread, and it is so simple I love it. I normally make the dough in the bread machine then pull it out and let it rise in loaf pans, better for sandwiches. I rub alittle butter or margarine on top and bake it. I bake mine for 30 min at 350 and its done.
i love your bread machine recipes! I’m going to try this one this weekend.
I don’t have a bread machine…how could I adapt this for the standard kneading, rising and baking process?
Can I substitute Regular milk for the powdered milk?
Made this yesterday and I really like it- so does my husband. I did use a whole grain hot cereal from Quaker (oatmal, barley, rye, etc) instead of just oatmeal. I used the smallest loaf & setting & the light crust setting which gave it a nice golden brown crust. Love it!
