I’m looking for a recipe for a cake that was baked in a pie shell. It may have had chocolate syrup on the bottom. It was great and my kids loved it. Now I would like to make it for the grandkids.
Pie Shell Cake

Are you still eating out, ordering pizza or stopping at the Drive-Thru window on your way home to get dinner? Let me show you how simple it is to put delicious, homecooked meals on the dinner table in less time than it takes you to order takeout. It's healthier and a lot less expensive and best of all, it won't take much time at all to prepare these homemade freezer meals.

What you’re describing sounds like an old Pennsylvania Dutch dessert called Funny Cake. I love it, too, and it took me years to find the recipe, which I finally did in an old church cookbook I bought at a 2nd Hand store.
Chocolate Funny Cake
1 prepared, uncooked pie shell (either storebought or make your own)
Bottom:
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. cocoa
3/8 c. water
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Mix bottom ingredients in a saucepan on stove. Bring to a boil. Turn off and keep warm.
Top:
1/4 c. soft butter
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
1 1/4 c. flour
1 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 c. milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg. Mix well. Add rest of ingredients. Mix well. Pour bottom layer into pie crust. Carefully spoon top mixture on. Bake at 350 for 40 min.
I happen to be Pennsylvania Dutch on both sides. This is an old family recipe, but I’m surprised. In our version, you pour the cake batter in the shell first, then pour the chocolate mixture over it. The chocolate finds its way to the bottom, flavoring the cake as it goes. You can also top with nuts before baking.
I made a pie like this called Innkeeper Pie from a Hershey’s cookbook. It’s on my blog here…..
