Inexpensive “Perfume”

I’ve started using Febreeze as perfume! It’s much less expensive and some of the scents are great. I always have a can at home and one in the car so it’s easy. I always get compliments.

I live in NZ and I don’t think we have Febreeze. Is it an airfreshener?

  2. Nancy Perry says:

What are the ingredients in Febreeze? Are they safe to use on the skin? A lot of air fresheners have ingredients that are toxic when absorbed through the skin.

  3. Christine says:

I have found that the air fresheners you get at organic markets which are strictly oil extracts in a spray bottle with nothing else(for example Orange Mist or Air Scents) are healthier to use in the house and would be FAR, FAR healthier to spray yourself with. They may be twice as much as Febreeze, but they’re stronger so you use less, and the cans last four times as long.

PLEASE, tell me it an’t so!

  5. Jennifer Z says:

That is down right SCARY! I will never use that stuff in my house, let alone on my BODY! Seriously, do NOT do that. This tip should be removed from the website before other people start doing this.

You can make your own “organic” air freshener by combining a cup or two of water with 12 or 15 drops of oil of cloves, oil of peppermint, eucalyptus oil, and/or oil of lavender essential oils. You can use one or mix them to your taste. Makes a marvelous air conditioner and I also spray it on my body after a shower in the summertime. It’s non toxic and I think is also antibacterial. Be careful with the oil of cloves, though, not to use too much, as that can be irritating for some people’s skins. But it smells wonderful!

Re: my comment about making your own “air freshener” – you can put it into a dollar store spray bottle and spray it in the air or on your body. The spray bottles can be purchased for $1 most places and mine last almost forever.

  8. Stacy says:

I have heard that febreeze contains carcinogens. I would do some research.

  9. robyn says:

I use essential oils daily as immune builders as well as therapeutically. If I find I want a little more fragrance, I just dab a drop on a pulse point.

  10. Nancy Michel says:

Fabreeze DOES contain carcinogens. Please do not, I repeat, do not use this on your body or around babies. I would never allow it in my house. Please be aware of what ingredients are in items that you put on your skin..even Johnson’s Baby Lotion contains many carcinogens as well as skin and lung irritants and yet people don’t think twice for slathering on their babies..

I’d never use an air freshener as a perfume but, please people, nearly everything that we use in our homes and on our bodies is bad for us. Do you stop and look at the ingredients on everything that you use? I didn’t think so. Take a look sometime and you’d be very surprised. According to the John Tesh radio show, by the time you finish your morning routine, you’ve already exposed yourself to hundreds and hundreds of harmful chemicals.

Well Dee, maybe by the time YOU’VE finished YOUR morning routine you’ve exposed yourself to hundreds of harmful chemicals. I have certainly not. I did stop and look at the ingredients on everything I was using – it didn’t take very long.

Those with harmful chemicals (basically everything) have been eliminated and I’ve found non-toxic, and in most cases CHEAPER alternatives. Shampoo – baking soda and water scrubbed into my scalp. Conditioner – apple cider vinegar and water drizzled over my hair. Toothpaste – baking soda (again! it cleans everything, and is a FOOD ingredient!) and peppermint essential oil. I make my own hair styling products and most of my own household cleaners. You can easily find recipes online. I started with one product, then moved on to another. Within a month or so we were in the clear. Nothing I use in my home or on my family’s bodies is toxic. That’s my job!

Febreeze is highly toxic. Anything with the ingredient “fragrance” is highly questionable.
