O.K. I made the Weiner Winks the other night. Hubby has eaten his hot dogs on plain bread before, but never had it like this. I used slices of Longhorn[Colby]cheese. He loved it,but says it needs improving, adding mustard on the inside of the bread, chopped onion, bake, then pouring my homemade hotdog chili, more chopped onion, shredded cheese.O.K.........

I did not grow up eating hot dogs, but my husband loves them. We stock up on hot dogs when they go on sale and freeze them. There are several brands of kosher hot dogs available now; Hebrew National, Empire National, Best (used to be called Shofar), and Aaron's. Both beef and chicken varieties are available. They are all delicious. We eat them on buns plain, as chili dogs, and as beanie weenies. I am looking forward to trying some of these new recipes. Thank you all!

There is a regionally available brand of hot dogs that are not a mish-mosh of unknown meat and meat by products. These Kosher hot dogs are made strictly of beef brisket. No mystery meat in them. They are naturally smoked. As always the best advice it to always do ones own research.

My beggest problem with hot dogs is that they are not cheap anymore. Especially the better quality ones.

My gosh! So much conversation over hot dogs!! All I know is my family grew up eating hot dogs(at least once a week) and we are none the worse for wear... My mother used to cut up the hot dogs, fry them in a skillet until nicely browned. Add a can of whole peeled tomatoes, a can of corn. a few sliced potatoes, salt and pepper to taste and a little water (to cook the potatoes). She called it her "Midwest Goulash". It tasted great and feed the family without going over budget.

Although I also prefer boneless chicken breasts, it is not always on sale for $1.99 ( boneless chicken breasts are usually $2.99 per pound)whereby hot dogs are always very low cost. It is true that hot dogs are a mish mosh of meats but honestly I have eaten them all my life with no ill effects. If you were to research what commercially raised chickens are injected with, you wouldn't eat that meat either.

I have eaten hot dogs all my life, and sold millions from my dad's hot dog stands. Fed them to my children, all 3 of whom are intelligent(my daughter has a academically measured IQ of 180 she's 16). The oldest (now 28), was diagnosed failure to progress, and they said he wouldn't live to be 5, alot of other things went along with the diagnosis, anyway we were told feed him whatever you can get him to eat. There were times when for weeks all he would eat was hot dogs, and boxed mac&cheese. You did notice I said he is now 28, He has traveled around the world, including China twice, South Africa, Libya, and many 3rd world countries where there are lots of diseases, and when others on his ship got sick he didn't. The point I am trying to make here is this you do what you have to do to survive. It's all in God's hands anyway if you trust in Him!
Oh yeah here's a recipe my mom made for us when she was struggling to raise 5 children while finishing nursing school: lightly fry up sliced hot dogs, when lightly browned add 10 oz. box of frozen mixed vegetables, 2 cups of water bring to boil, and add 1 cup of rice simmer until rice is done. Oh yeah add 2 Tbsp. butter when the water is hot enough to melt it, and before you add the rice. This fed 5 kids, and 2 adults many nights when we thought it would be macaroni with butter, and a veggie again. All time family fav recipe. Really good served with jiffy mix cornbread!!!!! Thanks Hillbilly Housewife in these tough times we need articles like these!

A cheap favorite of mine that also freezes well: HOTDOG MACARONI BAKE. One pack chicken franks ($.99), one box mac n cheese ($.47) and one jar salsa ($2.00). For $3.50, we can have multiple meals or dinner and lunch for the next day.
