</p> <p>DAY ONE</p> <p>Welcome to the first day of the Spring Cleaning and </p> <p>Organization Ecourse.</p> <p>First things first. Before you tackle a job as big as </p> <p>Spring Cleaning your entire house, you need to have a </p> <p>Plan of Action. </p> <p>Spring cleaning can be hard work, however, once yo’ve </p> <p>finished the job – when everything is sparkling & </p> <p>shiny you know in the depths of your dirty little mop </p> <p>bucket that the final results are well worth the </p> <p>effort you’re about to put forth. </p> <p>Let’s talk a bit about PREPARATION.</p> <p>If you’re able to complete the following list of tasks </p> <p>before starting your spring cleaning, you’ll find your </p> <p>project will go faster & smoother than it would have </p> <p>if you had just “winged it”.</p> <p>Start by evaluating each room and its organizational </p> <p>needs. Grab a notebook and jot down everything that </p> <p>needs to be addressed in each room before starting. </p> <p>For instance, if there is a messy stack of magazines </p> <p>on the coffee table, make a note to buy a magazine </p> <p>rack; donate them to your doctor’s office, nursing </p> <p>home or local library; or just trash ‘em.</p> <p>Take stock of what cleaning supplies you already have </p> <p>on hand & what you might need to buy. Add to the list </p> <p>any organizational tools that you need for each of </p> <p>your rooms. Having your supplies ready before you </p> <p>start will save you from running to the store, filthy </p> <p>from cleaning, to replace something that you have run </p> <p>out of, which might also cause you to lose motivation. </p> <p>Don’t forget to look in bathroom cabinets & cupboards; </p> <p>under the kitchen sink; the laundry room or garage – </p> <p>where you might happen to store cleaning supplies. </p> <p>You just might be surprised what you find or what you </p> <p>already have on hand that will do the job.</p> <p>Have a few motivators on hand. Find some type of </p> <p>reward for yourself for completing the larger tasks, </p> <p>such as a favorite snack for breaks and definitely </p> <p>turn on some upbeat music to dance to while you’re </p> <p>working. Start from the top and work down, clockwise around </p> <p>the room. You don’t want to have to re-clean items </p> <p>you’ve already gone over because you cleaned the </p> <p>counter tops before cleaning the crumbs out of the </p> <p>upper cabinets. </p> <p>2. If you have areas around the stove that have </p> <p>grease build up, spray them down and let it sit while </p> <p>working on other projects. </p> <p>3. Get to higher ground. Wipe of the tops of the </p> <p>cabinets and higher shelves next. While you’re up </p> <p>there don’t forget to clear off the top of the </p> <p>refrigerator.</p> <p>3. While the stepstool or ladder is out, take down </p> <p>the curtains and throw them in the washer. If you </p> <p>have blinds clean them or replace them, if necessary. </p> <p>Ceiling fan in the kitchen? Now would be a great time </p> <p>to clean off the paddles, wash the light globe and </p> <p>polish the metal fixtures.</p> <p>4. While you’re waiting for the curtains to finish </p> <p>washing, you might want to remember to clean your </p> <p>windows and screens. Let the light in by cleaning the </p> <p>windows inside & out. Leave the windows open once the </p> <p>screens have been replaced, to get some fresh air and </p> <p>let the cleaning fumes clear out. </p> <p>5. Now to the fridge. You might hate it bt it needs </p> <p>to be done so why not start cleaning the fridge by </p> <p>taking everything out of both the refrigerator and </p> <p>freezer. Throw away expired food, almost empty items, </p> <p>and anything that looks as if it has taken on a life </p> <p>of its own. In the freezer, trash anything that might </p> <p>be past its expiration date or has developed freezer </p> <p>burn. Clean all the surfaces and replace the items </p> <p>you kept. Make a list of things you need for your </p> <p>next shopping trip to replenish your stock.</p> <p>Whew! Besides, a </p> <p>spic and span bathroom that is also clutter-free will </p> <p>become a little piece of heaven to you.</p> <p>So, let’s get started!</p> <p>1. Take everything that doesn’t belong in the batroom </p> <p>out and put it where it belongs.</p> <p>2. Gather any dirty towels & washcloths; take down </p> <p>the shower curtain & liner & put them in the washer.<br /> Replace anything that needs replacing.</p> <p>3. Dust the walls & wipe them down. If you have </p> <p>mildew spots, spray a water/ bleach solution (5:1) & </p> <p>scrub lightly. Repeat until the mildew is gone. Make </p> <p>sure to test a hidden spot first to make sure you </p> <p>won’t damage anything.</p> <p>4. Remove any window treatments & clean them. Wash </p> <p>the windows – inside & out. Hose down the screens. </p> <p>Think about opening the windows to freshen the room & </p> <p>let any harmful fumes out.</p> <p>5. Cleaning the toilet using your favorite cleaner or </p> <p>bleach solution & let it sit while you finish up the </p> <p>rest of the room.</p> <p>6. If you have mildew in the tub or shower, spray it </p> <p>down with the bleach solution or a mildew<br /> removal product and let that sit as well.</p> <p>7. Clean your mirrors and shine the bathroom sink </p> <p>fixtures. </p> <p>8. Grab your soap dishes, toothbrush holders, and </p> <p>containers that usually sit on the sink area and wash </p> <p>them. If you’re able to put them in the dishwasher – </p> <p>even better.</p> <p>9. Scrub out the sink and dry thoroughly when you are </p> <p>done to prevent water spots.</p> <p>10. Time for the Tub. Start at the top and work down. </p> <p>Paying attention to the edges and corners. Mold and </p> <p>mildew like to hide in these areas. Scrub out the tub </p> <p>area and remember to polish the faucet and handles, as </p> <p>well. Wipe the tub dry when you are done.</p> <p>Look at that – you’ve accomplished so much over the </p> <p>last few days. </p> <p>The next step is the bedroom. We spend a lot </p> <p>of time in our bedrooms so let’s make that room a </p> <p>restful haven so you can have get a good night’s rest </p> <p>& start each morning refreshed & ready to go.</p> <p>So, how you can make your own bedroom (or your </p> <p>children’s rooms) the oasis they should be. I’m so </p> <p>glad you asked!</p> <p>Let’s start by:</p> <p>1. De-cluttering. Start by tackling the biggest </p> <p>project first…the closet. Use the top down approach, </p> <p>once again, and take everything off the shelves, if </p> <p>there are any.</p> <p>2. Sort through the pile of things from the shelf and </p> <p>decide what you need, what you want, and what can be </p> <p>thrown or given away. Grab some boxes or trash bags </p> <p>and once you decide what to do with it (keep, donate, </p> <p>throw it away) Follow through. Take donations </p> <p>directly to your favorite charity. Take the trash </p> <p>bags to the dumpster. Be ruthless. If you haven’t </p> <p>set eyes on something in more than 6 months – you </p> <p>don’t need it. Don’t keep stuff for “just in case”.</p> <p>3. Move down to the hanging items next. Take </p> <p>everything out and wipe off the hang bar. Now go </p> <p>through the pile of clothes, being blatantly honest </p> <p>with yourself. Get rid of the stuff you don’t wear </p> <p>often (with the exception of special ocassion </p> <p>clothing) & that doesn’t make you look & feel great.</p> <p>4. Get rid of the crappy wire hangers & anything </p> <p>that’s broken. You can buy new hangers very cheaply, </p> <p>or recycle those that are on the items you are getting </p> <p>rid of. If you find that your closet is still stuffed </p> <p>full, even after weeding out the old things, try </p> <p>adding a bar beneath one half and hanging tops on the </p> <p>upper bar and skirts and folded pants below.</p> <p>5. Finish up the closet by removing everything from </p> <p>the floor and vacuuming thoroughly. Dust the corners </p> <p>and wipe down the walls if needed. Sort through the </p> <p>items here with the same technique of throwing out the </p> <p>old, unnecessary items and only keeping what you need </p> <p>and really want.</p> <p>Taking the time to clean and organize your home is </p> <p>only half the battle. </p> <p>The real work begins after the major cleaning is done </p> <p>and the maintenance portion begins. </p> <p>In our final lesson tomorrow, we’ll give you some tips </p> <p>on how to keep your rooms clean and fresh.</p> <p>P.S. You’ve spent the last few days </p> <p>spring cleaning your home. </p> <p>I know you don’t want all your hard work to be for </p> <p>nothing so here’s the key to keeping your home ready </p> <p>for company. Maintenance. With just a little work </p> <p>every day (a habit you can learn) you’ll have a </p> <p>cleaner home & a much happier family.</p> <p>Try some of these tips to keep your home looking “just </p> <p>’spring’ cleaned” all year long.</p> <p>1. Keep a small basket in each room for things that </p> <p>do not belong. When you find an item that doesn’t </p> <p>belong put it in the basket. At the end of the day, </p> <p>take the items in the basket back to their homes. </p> <p>Better yet – delegate this task to a family member.</p> <p>2. Keep all of your cleaning supplies together, along </p> <p>with rags, paper towels, scrub brushes, and any other </p> <p>items you may need to complete any cleaning task. If </p> <p>everything is in one place, you won’t waste time & </p> <p>energy trying to chase things down. Don’t forget to </p> <p>add anything you’re getting low on to your shopping </p> <p>list so you never run out.</p> <p>4. Paper clutter is a biggie! Try to sort through </p> <p>your mail each day when it is brought in. Immediately </p> <p>throw away junk mail, saving only important letters </p> <p>and advertisements that you are planning to use. Place </p> <p>all the mail in a designated area and file the bills </p> <p>away after they are paid.</p> <p>5. Make sure that all the dishes done before you head </p> <p>to bed. It’s no fun if you have to look for a pot to </p> <p>cook in or a fork to eat with every time you turn </p> <p>around.
