Looking For Peach Pie Recipe With Sour Cream In Filling And Crust
Years ago I had a recipe for a peach pie that called for sour cream in the pie crust as well as in the pie. I was wondering if anyone had a recipe for this? I have since moved a couple times and can’t seem to find it & I would love to make it again! I have searched the internet over and over again & there isn’t one out there. Thanks for any help! Mindy
Total Vegan No Fat Recipes
I realize that the above request is hardly reminiscent of typical “hillbilly” recipes. However, there are a number of us folks with cardiac or vascular diseases who are coming to believe in the eating principles espoused by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn in his book “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease” (you may want to Google this).
Long story short he recommends NO animal protein, NO dairy NO nuts or seeds and NO added fats of any kind. WHOLE grains, fruits, vegetables beans and legumes are all OK. I know what you are thinking but the diet is surprisingly easy to follow.
If this is something you think your readers (the sick ones or one who want to prevent sickness) might be interested in, I urge you to think about it.
I have no connection with the Dr. or his book except that I, like Bill Clinton, am a follower of his diet.
Thank you for your time.

Easy Gluten Free Ideas Needed
Trying to do gluten free. Only one child really needs it… but we have nine kids at home ages 5-15.It’s the 5yo that needs the diet. I found gluten free spagetti noodles that taste really good but would love to find more that is easy to fix since I will be making everyone’s dinner and then his on the side. So single serving and simple. Is that even possible. Most I talk to tell me they are making everything from scratch. Ok. But I am no great cook. I still thank God every day for HH for the beginners bread as that is just the kind of recipe I need.
) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Need Recipe For Oat Crisp Topping With Shortening As Ingredient
But not any recipe!
I once had a recipe for an oat crisp topping I used on apple or peach crisp. The recipe contained shortening as an ingredient along with oats, sugar and cinnamon. It made a large batch and might have been a food service/school cafeteria recipe. Does anyone have something like this! It could me mixed and stored for a period of time and pulled out when ready to use. Sure would like to have it again!
Easy Meals For College Students
I’m in college right now, and sharing an apartment–and refrigerator–with three other girls. None of us are comfortable sharing food, so we have to cram 4 people’s worth of food into one pantry, one fridge, and one freezer.
Two of the girls are in an extremely limited budget situation, so the other girl and I let them have most of the freezer space so they only have to shop once a month. Unfortunately, this leaves probably about a cubic foot of space for us to share.
Do you have any tips for us to save money (tuition is killer, and only going to go up!) without doing freezer meals?
Looking For Easy Recipe For Tamale Pie
Growing up this was one of the meals my mother made and it was my favorite. After I was married she would say “I’ll fix you a dinner for your birthday, what would you like?” I would always ask for her Tamale Pie. She passed away a few years ago and I have been unable to find her recipe. If anyone has an easy recipe I would love it.

Pinterest Interest – Anyone Pinning HBHW?
Hi Susanne,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this website! I have loved it for years, and my family loves the recipes that come from your site. I have introduced many people to your recipes and tips. When I make my menu for the next week, I always ask my husband and son what they might want. My husband will quite often search some of your recipes to come up with ideas.
I noticed that after every article, there a list of ways to share (facebook, my space, twitter, etc.). Of the list, I only use facebook, and I liked you on facebook as soon as I found you on there. My question is have you ever considered getting onto pinterest? I would love to pin some of your recipes and articles!
Thanks for having such a wonderful wealth of information for frugal minded people who like to cook!

How Do I Clean White Blooms On A Large Potted Silk Plant
I have a beautiful silk Peace plant that’s about 4′ tall. It was very pricey, but I got a great deal on it about 10 years ago. My only problem is that the white “blossoms” look downright dingy. I’ve tried clear dishwashing soap (recommended by Michael’s silk plant person) as well as gel bleach pens. They still look bad. Cutting them out would further detract from the appearance since each stem also has leaves attached. Is there a way to clean large blooms of a heavy, potted silk plant?
Easy Flavorful Banana Bread Recipe
Seems every recipe I find for Banana Bread ends up lacking flavor and sweetness. I use good ripe bananas and whatever else the recipe calls for but it always seems to fall short of that moist flavorful banana bread I remember from my childhood. I have nine children at home and really want to show them just how good banana bread can be.
Thanks,
Bobbie*

I did not bother learning how to cook when I was growing up and sorely regret it.

Housefly Repellent
We just moved into a new home, and we are having a problem with this strange vortex of houseflies that swarm in the center of the garage, anytime the weather is pleasant. Of course they migrate into the house anytime the door between the garage and the house is opened, and we have two kids. Need I say more?
Any ideas on a natural way (non-chemical)to keep them from appearing in the garage, or even an effective barrier to keep them from migrating into the house? Really, I have to hold my breath when walking through the garage, or I’m afraid of inhaling one. They are that dense. But only in the very center of the garage. Weird. Thanks for any suggestions.

Help With Noodle Soups
Whenever I make any kind of noodle soup, and put the leftovers in the fridge, the noodles continue to “soak up” the broth and I end up with a soggy-noodle brothless soup the next day.
I’ve tried canning noodle soup and that makes the noodles even worse. So, I can my soup without noodles and add the noodles when I serve it.
But how do I keep the leftovers for lunch the next day? You can BUY noodle soup in cans, so there must be a way to get the noodles to stop absorbing the liquid.

Italian Star Bread Recipe
For the longest time I have been trying to find the recipe for Italian Star Bread. I can buy it at a nearby Italian bakery here in Springfield, MA but I would love to bake my own. It is shaped sort of like a “butterfly” and kind of twisty. The crust is golden in color a very, very smooth. The texture of the bread is so smooth and velvety. It is sooo good with pasta or with just nothing but butter. If you could find this recipe you would make me so very happy. Thanks for the opportunity to be able to make this request and for a great newsletter and site.

Whatever Happened To Yeast
When I was younger, I could purchase small bricks of active yeast. They worked beautifully! As I moved from place to place, I switched to powdered yeast and I have been using it for the last 20 years or so. My problem is that I now have to use 2 to 3 times as much yeast in recipes as I used to. This annoys me to no end! I primarily use Fleischman’s or Red Star yeast in the large jar size. In the last 12 months alone, I have bought 3 jars that were “dead,” and several others that just didn’t work as well as they should have. The bread would only rise half as much. When that happens, I mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of baking powder in the dough to salvage it. The yeast company refunded my cost with coupons, but I want yeast that works consistently. Can you recommend a great brand of yeast?
Family Friendly Vegan Entrees
I’m a vegan 95% of the time (no eggs, meat, or dairy). I’m looking for some new ideas for main dishes as it’s getting hard to cook vegan for me and simultaneously cook a non-vegan main dish for the family at dinnertime. Ideally, I’d like ideas on something that I can start as vegan (like veggie stir-fry) that I can put a portion aside for me, and then add chicken or eggs to, etc, for the rest of my family to eat. My kids are getting tired of stir fry.

Eating Healthy With Others In Household Who Are Finicky
Hi, My name is Misti and one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to eat healthier. With this being said, my family are VERY picky eaters. My husband will not eat anything with onions, mushrooms, or any veggies except corn and greenbeans. My kids are a litter better, but not much. I need some healthy recipes with out a lot of veggies in the content. I know that is kinda hard, that is why I am asking you. My husband has ate my lasagna that I put tiny pieces of mushrooms in and he didn’t know they were there, so even if the recipe would call for a little bit of veggies, that would be OK too. Thanks alot!!!

Soft Oatmeal Cookies Like Grandmother Made In 1960s
Looking for a soft oatmeal cookie recipe like my grandmother used to make in the 60s.

3 grand-daughters and several others are trying to replicate these mild flavored, always soft cookies.

Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies
This recipe that I am looking for is a light cake like cookie with chocolate chips, banana, walnuts and cinnamon in it. It is like the sugar sealed the cookies and they would stay in the earthen cookie jar for several weeks, if they lasted that long. I have been searching for this recipe for years. If anyone has this type of drop cookie, I am hoping you will share it. Thank you.

How To Clarify Turkey Broth
Hi all. I made two batches of broth from two turkeys – one broth turned out fine but the other one got pretty cloudy. I think the difference was on one I took my time and let it simmer slowly, and the other one I boiled too hard for too long.
Now I’m blessed with one batch of beautiful broth sitting in my freezer and another batch in my refrigerator waiting for some way to ‘fix’ it.
What is the best way to clarify broth? I’ve heard about using egg whites. Has anyone tried that and has it worked?

Searching For Nestle Quick Recipe
Hi All,
I love drinking chocolate milk and I love Nestle Quick, but it’s expensive. So… I’m trying to find a recipe to make a chocolate milk mix like Nestle Quick to try and save money.
There are only two considerations I need for this recipe:

*It must be for cold milk – not a hot beverage, and not to be mixed with water.
Thanks a bunch for your help!

Apple Pie Recipe with Applesauce

Tips For Storing Baking Soda
Is there a reason NOT to store baking soda in an airtight container? I was just wondering because it always comes in a cardboard box that doesn’t really seal shut instead of a carton with a snap on plastic lid (like baking powder).
I’ve been having a problem with my baking soda going “bad” I do a lot of canning this time of year and as a result, my kitchen (in fact my whole house – small single story) gets quite humid at times. I know that baking soda absorbs moisture from the air and this reduces its potency. As a result, I keep having quick bread failure. I know now, after a lot of wasted ingredients, to always “test” my baking soda first. I know baking soda is cheap, but I hate to keep buying a new box every time I want to make a batch of cookies or quick bread. So, I thought I should start storing it in a ziplock bag or plastic container. BUT was wondering if there was a reason it shouldn’t be stored air tight. I mean why doesn’t Arm & Hammer package it in an air tight container?

When she passed away I could not find the recipe anywhere. Does anyone out there have such a recipe?

Hot Night Suppers
If anyone has some suggestions for suppers to be served on nights when you just don’t want to turn on the stove or oven it would be appreciated. Sometimes its just too hot to heat up the house. Have the basic salads and fruit salads anything else?
Thanks in advance – Jan
Great question Jan and I can certainly relate right now. It’s super hot and I haven’t used my oven in weeks and the stove only when absolutely needed. Here are a couple of ideas for you:
Use your crockpot whenever you can. You can cook almost anything in there. Here are some crockpot recipes for you to try and take a look at my Crockpot Cooking Made Simple guide for lots more recipes and tips.
Grill – get hubby to grill some burgers, chicken, pork chops, steak, fish etc. on the grill. Make sure you have him cook plenty so you have leftovers for a few other meals.
Crumble up leftover hamburgers in your crockpot and turn them into chili or beef and vegetable soup.
Leftover chicken, pork and steak can be served cold the next day on sandwiches and salads.
When it come to baking, I just use my breadmaker for now.
For more summer cooking tips, take a look at this report about Simple Summer Cooking and I’m sure other readers have plenty of ideas to share.

I bought a alb sirloin from a local farmer for super cheap and was craving it so big time thought we’d eat it all. But by the time I cooked it i was kind of over it so there’s a ton left over. I can’t think of a thing to do with it! Any good ideas?
Vegetarian Dishes Without Soy Or Processed Foods
I’m looking for dishes that feature beans and/or vegetables but do not contain any processed ingredients (premade or convenience foods) or soy products (tofu, TVP, fake meat).
I am trying to show my daughters how to cook nutritious meals with ingredients we either grow or make ourselves.
Much Thanks,
Geeta
Homemade Alfredo Sauce
I am a big fan of alfredo and would like to eat it a lot but the good sauce is horribly expensive and even the cheap, strange tasting stuff is almost $2 a jar. I would love to be able to make up my own sauce from scratch.
Tin Foil Dinners
I have heard a lot lately about tin-foil dinners/ pocket meals cooked in the oven to save on clean-up.
I am interested in creative recipes (not just the old hamburger onions potato and carrots) for tin-foil dinners, how long to cook them etc.
Those who use them, I would love to hear the pros and cons of doing so.

Icebox Pie
I don’t have a lot of information on this dessert. It was one my MIL used to make circa 1965. My husband recalls it contained bananas (the riper the better), whipped cream and pulverized Nilla wafers that she would then freeze solid. Knowing my hubby, he’s probably missing ingredients and or steps to the process. Can anyone help me reconstruct this recipe? Thanks

Mock Spiced Apple Rings Made With Cucumber Slices
My daughter’s ex-mother-in-law makes delicious home-canned mock spiced apple rings using cucumber slices. Sadly they don’t speak anymore and I’d love to find this recipe. I think it might be an Amish recipe, her ex-in-laws used to vacation with an Amish family every summer when they were able. The canning liquid tastes like cinnamon red hot candies and are bright red, also coloring the sliced cucumbers. Does anyone know of such a recipe?
Thanks, Jennifer in GA
Stir Fry Sauce Recipe
Kikkoman makes a bottled “pour & stir” stir fry sauce that I really like. Does anybody have a stir fry sauce recipe that tastes like this? Would be really nice to find recipe that stores well in the fridge for a couple of weeks… Thanks bunches!
From The HBHW
Hi Joy, I have a recipe that I’ve been playing with for a while. My daughter loves Asian food and this sauce seems to do the trick, especially for chicken and broccoli or beef and broccoli. I start with a little less soy sauce and then add more at the end if needed.
Stir Fry Sauce Recipe
- 1/3 cup soy sauce (or more to taste)
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/3 cup rice wine
- 3 1/2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic*
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger*
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/4 cup water
Whisk the soy sauce, chicken broth, rice wine, sugar, sesame oil and pepper together in a small bowl.
Next get out a coffee cup or any other small cup and dissolve the corn starch in a few tablespoons of water. Make sure you work out all the clumps and end up with a smooth milky liquid.
Heat the oil in a small sauce pan. Add the fresh ginger and garlic and cook it for a few seconds until you can start to smell them.
Next, pour the soy sauce mixture into the sauce pan and bring everything to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for a few minutes. Add the corn starch slurry and turn the heat back up a bit. Stir the sauce continually until it starts to get bubbly and thickens up a bit.
It’s now ready to use in your favorite stir-fry. Allow any leftovers to cool and store them in a small container with a lid in the fridge (an old stir fry or salad dressing bottle works well). Use it up within a week.
* The sauce is best when it’s made with minced fresh garlic and ginger. You can however also make it by adding a little dash of garlic powder and ginger powder to make this recipe a bit more frugal.

Diabetic Recpes For Toddlers
I’m looking for healthy, but easy diabetic recipes that are “toddler friendly”.
My one year old was diagnosed with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes just before her first birthday (a little over a month ago).
I have struggled to find things that are healthy for her that she doesn’t get tired of because I make them over and over. I have very little time, but would like to prepare fresh things for her. She has 6 teeth and does very well chewing.
Does anyone have ideas that they can share with me?
Grinding My Own Meats
My husband has ordered a meat grinder, saying we can save money like nobody’s business. Only I don’t know how. I know I can make regular ground beefs, chicken, porks, and with recipes I can make sausages BUT… does anyone have some tips for me? Any tried and true recipes? Any other ideas besides ground meat or sausages? I want to make this purchase pay for itself as soon as possible!
Bread Of Some Sort – Or Dough (Recipe)
I use to have a friend years ago that would make this dough rolled out and then she would put some olive oil on that then olives cheese and some sort of meat then rolled it up like a cinnimon roll then baked it after it was rolled she would put a light layer of egg for browning then put it in the oven and cut it served it hot.
Im not sure of how much and what to add to the dough and how long to keep this whole concoction in the oven at what temp but when it was done it was sure yummy. Reminds me of a bakes sandwich or something. Does anyone have any sort of recipe like this?
Duggar Laundry Soap
Does anyone have a recipe for the duggar laundry soap? I heard them mention it on TV a while back, but never got around to jotting down the recipe. We are trying to cut back on what we spent and I figured I’d give this homemade laundry soap a try.
Thanks in advance.

Cleaning Mini Blinds
I’m looking for a good way to clean mini blinds. My house came with a ton of them, and I need an easy quick way to clean them. I have 12 1/2″ plastic ones and 8 1″ wooden ones. I’ve heard you can just take them out and hose them off on your picnic table, but I don’t really want to get the gears wet in the top housing. The wooden ones take about an hour each to clean each slat by hand, but they’re nice and it’s not too bad. The plastic ones I can’t stand.
Help – I really don’t have the money to replace them.
Porkless Sausage Wanted
I don’t eat pork (for Biblical reasons) and I do miss sausage (dinner & breakfast). I found a “turkey breakfast” sausage at Walmart that I use for Sausage Gravy & Biscuits.

Thanks, Karen

My Thick, Old Fabric softener
I have a VERY large, VERY old jug of fabric softener. It is so old and thick, It’s not easy to get it out of the jug. It is the type of jug that you set on it’s side and press the dispenser button/knob down.(and the jug is almost full)
Q: Is the softener revive-able? I would hate myself if I thought there is no life left in it and had to just throw it away. The jug is just SOOO full! I am afraid to mix water into it. I don’t know if the water will even mix with this thick pastey stuff. Please, someone tell me they know what to do.
Need Help With Ants
Just recently, our house has been invaded by ants. Not the big “I’m here to eat your house down” type but the small, itsy bitsy ones my Mom called sugar ants. The cats just stare at them; they must know that the little squiggly things are horrible to taste. Does anyone know of a non-poisonous solution that I can use to rid our house of these unwanted visitors? Something that is safe for small animals?
Egg Recipes Needed
I am about to be overrun with even more than the 4 dozen eggs a week I get now – I need new ways to use them up! Everyone around here has gotten backyard hens, in order to beat this economy, so there’s no one left to sell them to.
By August, I’ll have another dozen hens laying, and I don’t want these eggs to go to waste!
Any new recipes to use them up would be appreciated.
(The brownie recipe I got off this site is an all-time favorite – it uses 4 eggs!)

New Puppy – Feeding Trouble
We have an 8 week old lab puppy. He’s cute as a bug and very smart, but oh, so naughty (as all pups are). For the most part, he’s on a long cable outside, but my husband wants him to come in to eat. He isn’t in long before he goes on the carpet, and he doesn’t like to eat more than a few bites at a time before he runs off… provided you’re not standing over him. Then he’ll eat. I have waited till nearly 11:00 to feed him, and he still does this. I’m sure he’s hungry, but man, what do you do with him? He’s SO social it’s almost annoying. I don’t like to continually scold him and I do NOT want to stand there waiting for a dog to eat. LOL

Freezing Rhubarb Pie
I have a friend who wants me to provide rhubarb pies for a late summer gathering (Post fresh rhubarb season). I know from past experience that frozen rhubarb is great for cakes and muffins, but does not make good pies. I have never frozen a rhubarb pie (or any pie) before. I’m afraid if I freeze it uncooked, it will be the same as freezing rhubarb (gets all watery). Can I freeze it after I bake it, or would the crust get soggy? Has anyone actually done this? I’d really like to hear from someone’s actual experience, not an “I’d think…” Thanks for the advice

How To Grow A Garden That The Deer Won’t Eat
We have tried to have a vegetable garden for several years. We have had no luck with it because the deer eat the plants. There is a heavy presence of deer in our area and they are not picky eaters. They eat everything except marigolds and evergreens. Since we live in a subdivision, we are not allowed to have barbed wire or electric fences. Does anyone have suggestions on how to grow a deer-proof garden?

Looking For Ideas To Reuse Large Glasses From Used Candles
I burn a lot of candles. I prefer to buy the large size (I think they’re more economical and I buy them on sale for 1/2 price at Bath & Body Shop). Once the candle burns down, what can I do with the leftover glass container? The medium size ones I use in the bathroom for Q-tips and cotton balls, and the little ones I reuse for leftover candle wax. But I’m stumped what to do with the large size. Does anyone have any suggestions?
College Loans And Parent’s Responsibility
Looking for anyone with college loan experience. Yesterday my daughter got her college loan papers telling her how much she got on the FAFSA etc. It also listed the different grants and loans she can take out for her first year at college and the breakdown. The last item was called Parent loan and it was for 18,000.00. They expect the parent to sign/cosign for the student loan. She’s not going to an online university. I went to a 2 year college to avoid student loans and want to start paying off bills and saving for retirement. I had no plans for signing any college loan with her. Does anyone out there have any prior experience on this subject? I am desperate!!!

Microwave Biscuit Dessert
I’m looking for a biscuit recipe I had back in the 80′s in Wisconsin. It uses biscuits, brown sugar and butter. I remember you use a glass pie plate and put a small drinking glass in the center, so the finished caramel doesn’t get in there. You cook in the microwave but I don’t remember much else. I was 17 years old so I didn’t pay attention. Thank you in advance.

What To Do With Puffed Rice
I made a cereal bar recipe that called for puffed rice cereal (not rice krispies). It was very good, but it made a lot, so I won’t be making it again for a while. Meanwhile, I have a large box of puffed rice (minus 2 cups). It’s not very good “eating” — it just turns to mush when you put milk on it. SO — any ideas what I can do with the rest of the puffed rice? I’m thinking it is going to be stale by the time I make the cereal bars again.

Grandma’s Jam Cake And Frosting
My grandmother passed when I was 16 – she had 6 sisters/SILs and 3 daughters & 2 daughters-in-law and 5 granddaughters…she shared this recipe with NOT A SINGLE ONE of us.
This 2-layer cake was dense/thick but not too heavy. It looked like a spice cake and may have had maple flavoring and walnuts. The frosting was the color of caramel or light-brown and had the consistency of fudge – it would set up with a sugary-crystalization and seal in the cake, so the cake was amazingly moist.
The family has been looking for this recipe or similar for 20 years! She was from Southern Indiana…if that helps. Thanks in advance…Michelle

No Wheat, No Sugar Recipes
I am not sure if anyone can help me, but I am desperate for a few new recipes. I have been diagnosed with fructose malabsorption and so have a ton of dietary restrictions. Basically what I CAN have is plain meat (ham and bacon are usually sugar cured), potatoes, rice, spinach, lemon, mushrooms, garlic, and dairy. I CANNOT have wheat, onions, soy, beans, sugar in almost any form (including artificial sugars and natural sugars- I can have dextrose/glucose), fruit, and almost no vegetables (only a few greens are OK). I also have to watch corn in certain forms. Like I can have degermed cornmeal and cornstarch, but not plain corn. Anybody have any ideas? It has been terribly expensive buying gluten free, sugar free things and trying to still not eat the same 5 meals. My staples right now are alfredo with rice noodles, potato soup, mushroom soup, plain hamburgers, plain roast, and chicken and rice. I have a family of five and would like to only have to cook one meal at night. Just hoping someone might have new ideas to try. Thank you in advance for anything.
Husband’s Greasy Laundry
My husband works 12 hour shifts frying potatoes in a factory. His laundry not only STINKS like old oil, it is also greasy and sometimes batter-splattered. I’ve been giving them a double wash in hot water, using Arm and Hammer detergent, Dawn dish soap, Febreze Laundry, and rinsing with vinegar. It helps, but we’re still going to have to toss his clothes soon (not to mention the Febreze is $$). They still stink – though not as bad, and though not as greasy, it tends to build up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The cookies were about 4″ in diameter, pale and the chunks were a pale golden color. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mock Lemon Pie Made With Cornmeal and Vinegar
Years ago I found a recipe in a heritage cookbook for a mock lemon pie made with cornmeal and vinegar. It was similar to a shoofly or custard pie. BUT there was no crust as the cornmeal settled and became the crust. I only made it once and it was very good. I’ve looked for 20 plus years for a copy. If anyone can help I would appreciate it immensely !

Sugar free Diet (ADHD)
My daughter is 4 had has to be on a sugar free diet. She has been diagnosed with ADHA. I homeschool and refuse to put her on meds. She has been to the hospital 3x last year for jumping off things. The last time I took her in for a follow-up visit the doctor said I need to do something. I had been asking him for alteratives with no help so I googled it and we remove sugar and dyes and WOW the difference!!
She has been a trooper as have my other kids with the change in diet but I need some ideas or recipes.
She LOVES chocolate milk and cake. lol This has been the hardest to do away with but maybe someone has a suggestion on how to make these sugar free. Also all the vitamins and meds (like Tylenol and cold meds) Have sugar in them and if I give them to her she goes bonkers. This is all new to me and I had no idea how much sugar my kids were getting!! Thank you in advance for any help
ADHD and Food
I am writing to ask for some help. My son has been diagnosed with ADHD (from his school, not the dr) and my husband and I don’t want to put him on the medication. In fact, I’m pretty sure my husband is going to be adamant about not putting him on it. He was on ADD meds till he finally refused to take them. He said they made him like a zombie. Yes, I know they don’t give the same kind of meds but I agree with him about not giving a 7 year old medication all the time. Anyway, What I’m looking for are recipes/menus, anything that we can try to help him out. I firmly believe there’s got to be something other than medication that will help. In fact, I’ve researched a certain program but I can’t afford it right now. This is pretty serious so any help will be great. He’s failing his second year of K (but getting 1-on-1 with a special ed teacher and doing a little better). Thanks a bunch.

Holiday Fruit Pie – Pie With Raisins and Coconut
This is a pie I remember from my childhood, one that my Grampa LOVED, that my mother would make from my grandmother’s recipe. Unfortunately, that recipe was lost over time. I remember the pie had raisins and coconut and pecans in it, and the filling (and basically, the pie itself) was similar to that of a pecan pie. I have looked all over the internet and can’t find this recipe, so if someone knows how to make it or something close to it, I would be so grateful if you could share. I’d love to make this pie a tradition with my own family. I feel baking this pie will be a way to include a little of my Grampa’s spirit and my fond childhood memories in my own family’s traditions this christmas. Thanks for your time, and happy holidays!

Chili Colorado Recipe
My husband loves a dish that we know as Chili Colorado. He came to love this at a Mexican restaurant in CA and found it once at an AZ restaurant.
It’s made with Beef (maybe the cuts used for beef stew) in a red sauce. It is served with flour tortillas, rice and beans (at least that’s how we’ve had it).
Anyway, I’ve spent countless hours searching for this recipe. If you by chance have a recipe for Chili Colorado and willing to share, I would really appreciate it.

Overnight Cookies or Forgotten Cookies
These are made with egg whites (I think) and you drop them on cookie sheets, put in the oven, then turn the oven off and leave it overnight. I had seen the recipe in an e-mail newsletter, I received. I wanted to try it because I thought it might be what my grandma used to call “cloud cookies” — but now I can’t find the e-mail, and I didn’t see it with the recipes on this website.
Sweet Rice Balls
A friend of mine and I (we are from the Mid-west and the South, respectively) have been talking about rice recipes and we both remember someone in the FAR distant past making these soft, sweet sticky treats that were small balls of rice. They were delicious and we tried to find any info or recipes for them but cannot remember the name of the dessert or any other ingredients besides rice and obviously – sugar. Does this ring a bell with anyone else? I have a ton of white rice and am always looking for ideas. – honnha

Baking/Cooking without an oven
Dear Editor,
A friend told me about your site after my family and I fell on hard times, (we were homeless for about a year…3 kids under the age of 7…2 adults). We are now blessed because we have shelter but the home has no oven, just the burners work on the stove. What is a great way to feed a family of 5 without an oven on the cheap? Also, no freezer here as well, (like I said, thankful for shelter).
Thank you in advance.

Gluten free recipes for Christmas menu
I roast a traditional turkey at Christmas but put together some vegetable dishes and stuffings separately. I try to concoct veg dishes that are tasty for everyone and restrict the G.F. dessert to one dish (no flour or flour by-products). I have lots of G.F. cookbooks but I want dessert recipes that have no pastry. Gluten free baking is very expensive and I’m on a close budget. I made a pumpkin ‘pie’ for Canadian Thanksgiving minus the pastry shell. It was a yummy pudding-like affair thickened with ‘allowable’ buckwheat flour. Calling all cooks out there in cyberspace with similar Gluten Free challenges!
Scratch Jiffy Cornbread Recipe
looking for a from scratch recipe for cornbread that tastes like the Jiffy brand. I’ve tried adding sugar to some recipes, but they still don’t taste similar. My son prefers this to southern style and there are times when I just don’t want to run out to the store.

In search of gluten-free lemon bars
Lemon bars are an economical sweet and have always been my favourite but now I must cook gluten-free meals (no wheat or wheat byproducts, read flour, etc., etc., – everything, especially prepared foods of all sorts seems to have wheat as an ingredient!). I can ‘jerry rig’ a pastry bottom for the bars using rice flour and other non-wheat flours but I wondered if I needed to re-invent the wheel. Anyone out there preparing low-cost gluten-free foods?

Homemade Johnson’s No More Bedhead spray
I have boys with thick hair that needs quick taming in the morning. Plain water isn’t controlling it. I sometimes use No More Bedhead or No More Tangles, but it’s too costly anymore. I wondered if anyone had a recipe for something I can spray on their hair that won’t gunk it down too much. I tried adding a little conditioner to the water, but it makes their hair dirty very quickly, and getting them in the bath every other day is challenge enough! Thank you!

Milk toast
My mother in law used to make something she called “milk toast”, but it was far more than just heated mild over toast. She no longer remembers even making it, let alone how she did it. It was something like a white sauce with small squares or chunks of toast. It was very good, very filling and very inexpensive to make which was why she made it–almost as a last resort.
Molasses Recipes
I’m trying to add blackstrap molasses to my diet because it is high in iron, and supposedly a complete iron – like red meat iron – without the red meat. I am not a vegetarian, but eat very little red meat. The red cross keeps rejecting me because of my low iron
Anyway, I’ve tried using it as a substitute for honey in a few things without much success. So I’m looking for recipes using molasses (NOT cookies, “real food” recipes – main dishes or side dishes) Preferably blackstrap molasses, which is darker and a little less sweet than regular molasses.
Thanks!
Looking for a special cookie bar
this recipe was made 40 years ago and served at a little restaurant called Cambridge Junction Inn. The lady who made this lebchuken type bar never would give out her recipe to “we Kids” but I have never found a bar that tasted like this.. it had the almond placement on the top of each bar. was soft like a old fashioned gingerbread cookie, and I am sure had molasses in it.. The only thing that I think might have had some influence in it was the fat, lard, or bacon drippings that kept it soft. Can anyone help me? The cook was Ruth Mays or Maes from Brooklyn, Michigan

Gluten Ham
Hi! I found a vegetarian gluten ham recipe on this site a couple years ago, and loved it. It became a tradition for my kids and I on the holidays, and when I went to find it over Easter, the recipe was gone. Sadly, I never saved the recipe, just the link. Is there any way you could re-post it for me, or maybe email it to me? It would make us all so happy to be able to make it again this holiday season.
Thanks so much!!

Can’t find French Apple Pie like I had as a child. It was a regular apple pie except the filling had raisins and it tasted like a touch of nutmeg or allspice. After baking, the top pie crust was glazed with a powdered sugar icing that had some spice in it. Thanks for helping me go back in time.

Buttermilk Waffle Recipe
My Daughter had a cookbook in high school with wonderful waffles. She is 46 now so you see our problem. It had buttermilk, eggs and when I made a big batch I used a dozen eggs and a quart of butter milk. It had oil and baking powder and flour(I used part fresh whole wheat) and these were very good. It may have been Betty Crocker or other popular book of the time. She lost it in a fire. There were yeast waffles that were in the fridge over night, too. Does anyone know these recipes?
How To Make A Mustard Pack
My grandma always made this strong smelling “mustard pack” for us grandkids when we had a chest cold. She would make this mustardy mix, place it between to cotton hankies and then make us where it on our chest.

Thank you in advance for all your wonderful ideas.
Egg-less Chocolate Cake
I am looking for a recipe to a cake my mom used to make when I was a kid. I remember she called it “Egg-less Chocolate Cake”. She would mix it up and cook it in a 13×9 pyrex.
We wouldn’t even ice it, just eat it warm when it came out of the oven. It was very moist and it was my favorite.
Nowadays, about 30 years later, my mom doesn’t even remember it. Funny how our memories work, I guess it wasn’t that big a deal to her at the time, but to me as a kid it was. A google search has not revealed the recipe.
Thanks for any help!
Blessings,
Mary

Packed School Lunches
Our high school does not allow “refillable” containers, e.g., thermoses, tupperware containers, etc. because of a possibility of kids bringing alcohol to school. Thus, a cunundrum of what to pack for a healthy lunch – our usual is a sandwich or rollup – piece of fruit – chips of some sort – a sweet (cookie) and a bottle of water. Sandwiches and cookies are in plastic bags and the chips are usually prepackaged. Can you suggest some tips to make lunches more “exciting” and healthy within the realm of plastic bags?

Vanilla Chai Spice Liquid Coffee Creamer
I’m looking to make my own version of Coffeemate’s Vanilla Chai Spice Coffee Creamer, preferably liquid. I actually want to make a sugar-free version, as they don’t have one, and sugar-free offerings in the coffee creamer area, whether liquid or powder, are extremely limited. I was thinking of using Truvia or Splenda (or their lower-cost alternatives) for the sweetener. I can’t figure out the spices, or the quantities. Thank you.

Also, after it was baked, it was wrapped in cheesecloth and foil, and soaked in apricot brandy for a few weeks in the fridge. Marshmallow Cream Pie
Back in mid-1970s – early 1980′s, my mother started making what she called marshmallow cream pies. I’m sure she got the recipe off a jar of cream or bag of marshmallows. It was my favorite pie and she’d never give me the recipe, only my sister, and now she’s dead.

Thanks to anyone who can help me on this.

Low Potassium Recipes
I have recently been diagnosed with mild Kidney disease and was told that I need to limit Potassium in my diet. This means that anything 201mg of Potassium (per 1/2 cup) are things I cannot eat. Some of these items are potatoes, tomatoes, cooked spinach, and strawberries and bananas. To make this even harder, I also need to limit sodium and sugar (husband is a diabetic).Quite frankly, we are struggling to put good food on our table. The most important item to manage is the Potassium so I am looking for recipes that taste good but are lower in Potassium.
Thanks,
Maggie
Refridgerator Bread?
I once saw a recipie for homemade bread that you mix up in a big batch then stick it in the refridgerator. You pull off what you need for that day. This saved you making the dough everyday hassel and you still got fresh homemeade bread everyday. Has anyone seen it?

Oven Canning Method
I have always canned every year using the old fashioned way of using the hot bath canning method. This year I read of a new way of canning. I fill my clean jars with whatever I am canning and put them all in my oven. Turn the oven on to 250 degrees. When the oven is preheated I turn the oven off. I let the jars sit in the oven for at least 1 hour. When I take the jars out of the hot oven they all seal so easily. Or I can leave them sit in the oven until it cools. I can so much faster using this method. It is wonderful. But now I am reading so much on the internet saying this is not a good way to can and it is not safe. I have never had any problems canning this way and enjoy is so much. Are there any other readers out there that have heard of any problems using this method? I plan to continue using this method.

Gob or Whoppie Pie
I grew up in Western Pennsylvania–the land of the wonderful “gob”, known in other parts as a “whoopie pie”. I have several recipes for gobs, but the homemade white filling (not the yellow stuff found in the commercially marketed gobs) never seems to be quite right; it is never as fluffy, thick, or sweet as the homemade gobs that we buy when we are in Pa. Does anyone have a recipe for that gob filling so that I can begin to enjoy my own homemade gobs? Also, does anyone have a recipe for the pumpkin gobs? I only have a chocolate recipe.
My taste buds thank you in advance,
Judy

Stuffed Pepper With Chicken
My husband told me about a dish that he used to eat at his best friends house when he was younger. I can’t find anything like it and I’ve been searching for a couple of years, now.
He said it was a stuffed pepper recipe but with chicken or turkey dinner instead of ground beef and tomato sauce.
Do you or any of the readers make anything like this. I was going to just ‘trial and error’ it but I tend to do more error on the moisture side and end up making dishes too soggy or too dry. Any help would be appreciated.

Friendship Cake
My mom (May She Rest In Peace) had a friend that used to make something around the holiday’s called friendship cake. It took about a month or so to make. You would add something one day and then stir it the next. I know it was kinda like a fruit cake because it had a bunch of dried fruit in it but was FAR BETTER than any fruit cake I ever ate. Can someone please help me try to bring this recipe back to life?
Amanda A.
