- 1-1/2 cups warm tap water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
Measure the ingredients into the bread pan in the order listed. Make a well in the flour and sprinkle the yeast into it. Set the machine to it’s Whole Wheat Cycle. On my machine this lasts for 3 hours and 40 minutes. Press Start, and let the machine work it’s magic. Remove the cooked bread from the pan after baking and allow it to cool before slicing. Makes a 2 lb loaf.
This is my kids favorite whole wheat bread. The honey makes it very sweet, and soft. This bread lasts longer than some machine made breads before going stale. The honey acts as a natural preservative.

How do I go about using this recipe to make a 1.5 pound loaf? Can I reduce every ingredient proportionaly?
every loaf of bread I make does not rise… i have made sure I use fresh yeast, fresh ingredients.. and still nothing? Does it have something to do with the fact we are at sea level? I know I have to make several other foods differently here… is bread one of these? never had this problem inland.. If so.. what do I do differently?
Are you adding warm or hot water? If the water is too hot it can kill the yeast. I had numerous loaves that didn’t rise before I understood this. I use water that is just barely warmed and no longer have problems with loaves not rising. Good luck!
Hi everyone!
Further to Jan Kelley’s question above, I too, am looking to see how I can make this recipe for a 1.5lb loaf! Being that I am not the best bread maker, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much,
Meagan
I inherited a machine that is rather old and only makes loaves up to 1.5 lbs. I went ahead and made this recipe for the 2 lb, figuring at worst I’d have a mess to clean up. Whole wheat bread doesn’t rise the same and white or bread flour, and the loaves are denser. My loaf turned out beautifully without a hitch.
I have looked for and tried many 100% whole wheat bread recipes for the bread machine, and this is the best! It rises VERY well, which I love and it is soooo tasty! It’s fluffy and not dense and dry like you would think a whole wheat bread recipe would be! All 7 of us LOVE this bread!
I follow the recipe exactly, and put it in my bread machine on the Whole Wheat cycle. 3 hours later we have beautiful whole wheat bread! Make sure to use room-temperature or lukewarm water!
